Occupy the Background!: Sound Art Intensive
For All Audiences
July 15-16, 2013
9:30AM – 3:30PM

Program Information

Over two days of intensive workshop sessions, participants will engage in an exploration of sound, especially in its relational capacities to inform and condition everyday life.

Sound permanently occupies the background, whether we are always conscious of it or not.

How could an increased attention to sound make us aware of our perceptual situation in an increasingly complex world? How can sound be employed to enhance the construction of social bonds? How has sound been used to modulate mood and affect? What relationships might sound have to subliminal advertising and branding (and how can one potentially break free from them)? How do earworms come into existence? How do sound, time and space work together?

These questions will be looked at through a variety of modes:

  • listening experiments
  • field recording capture
  • creative (de)construction
  • spatial intervention

Participants will obtain a FASI Certificate of Completion by the end of this module.

Dates: July 15-16, 2013, 9:30AM – 3:30PM
Maximum number of Participants: 10
